ALLEN, TEXAS - Dr. Jen Welter who started her men’ professional football tenure with the Texas Revolution, has been appointed the first female to coach in the NFL and will be doing so with the Arizona Cardinals as an intern.
Welter began her 14 year playing career in professional women’s football and capped it off by being the first woman to play a non-kicking position in men’s professional football in 2014 with the Texas Revolution.
“We are very proud of what Jen has been able to accomplish over the past two years”, stated Revolution President Charlie Hildbold. “Jen has had a positive effect on everyone she has come in contact with during her time with the Revolution, and I firmly believe that will continue with the Cardinals, and lead to a long career in the NFL!” In 2015, the Revs brought Jen on as a coach. Helping lead the squad to their first ever winning season and an eventual loss in the CIF’s Champions Bowl, Welter has a had a positive effect for Texas. “Dr. Jen Welter has been a tremendous asset to the Texas Revolution both as a player and a coach. I am certain that she will bless the Cardinals in a similar manner very quickly as the players and her fellow coaches work with her and witness her passion for the game of football”, said Revolution CEO, Tommy Benizio.
Promoting players to the CFL or NFL is a normal occurrence for the Revolution, actively promoting a woman to the highest level of our game is a like catching lighting in a bottle. “Jen has been able to do a lot for football today in making it a cross gender sport. Her goal is a lofty one, but by breaking barriers like this, she is well on her way to making a lasting impression” stated Revolution Vice President of Communicaitons, Mathew Lunsford.
Welter will begin her NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals as an intern lasting 3 weeks of training camp through the pre-season. In honor of such the Revs will be offering a free commemorative limited edition Jen Welter T-Shirt with the purchase of 2016 season tickets.
