Albuquerque, N.M. – The Duke City Gladiators (2-2) have now found their way in the 2017 season with a huge blowout win over the Centex Cavalry (0-3) last night. It was a final score of 75-14 and fans definitely got a bang for their buck.
The atmosphere in Tingley Coliseum was an exciting one as fans saw a show filled with fireworks and lots of scoring by their “hometown” team.
The first quarter began with both teams turning the ball over on their first possessions. One of the turnovers was made on an interception by Defensive Back Dontrell Johnson that was returned for 32 yards. It wasn’t until just under three minutes the Gladiators drew first blood on a 45 yard bomb to Wide Receiver Larry Cobb for a touchdown. The Cavalry tried to get a drive off the ground, but didn’t expect DB DeAndre Wright to swoop in for a 48 yard pick six and end the quarter at 14-0.
The 2nd quarter started with the ball in the Cavalry’s hands. A sack for a 10 yard loss by Jayson Serda left Centex to turnover on downs giving the Gladiators a 1st and 10 on the Centex 13. Porterie connected with WR Dexter Manley for an 8 yard touchdown making the score 21-0 with 11:48 on the clock. The Cavalry scored on a 1 yard rush 3 minutes later and failed to convert the two point attempt. It only took 36 seconds for Duke City to answer back with a back to back touchdown reception by Manley. The Gladiators pushed their lead 27-6 with 7:59 remaining in the half. Another easy drive and score on a 14 yard grab by Cobb made things 34-14. The Cavalry were able to take advantage of a touchdown on a 50 yard kick return while completing a two point attempt. In the remaining seconds of the quarter, Porterie found WR Julian Walker on a 14 yard touchdown reception to close out the half 41-14.
The Gladiators started out with the ball in the second half and it didn’t take long for WR Ricardo Johnson to score on a 23 yard drive. The score was 48-14 and it was at this moment Duke City stepped on the gas and never looked back. The Cavalry would go four and out on their next three possessions. This opened things up for WR Lucien Walker to add a 4 yard TD rush to his resume and a beautiful play action pass from Porterie to WR Sedrick Johnson to close out the quarter 61-14.
It was all in the books in the 4th quarter as the Gladiators scored on a Manley 4 yard grab. The Cavalry just couldn’t connect with anyone as missed receptions and defensive pressure plagued the team. Another 19 yard touchdown pass to Julian Walker was the nail in the coffin as the Gladiators led 75-14 with 8 minutes left on the clock. There would be no major plays for the Cavalry and the game would end.
Duke City’s “score fest” translated to just under 19 minutes of possession time, 39 plays, 16 first downs, and 265 total offensive yards.
When Head Coach Dominic Bramante was asked about his thoughts on the game against Centex he said, “We’ve already moved on to Amarillo.”
It was a huge defensive night for DB Jayson Serda as he says, “I just wanted to make plays and that’s my goal every game.”
The Gladiators’ sights are indeed set on Amarillo as they are looking to even the score on the Venom home turf.
QB Porterie completed 21-27 passes, 239 passing yards, and 9 TD passes. Porterie leads the league in touchdown passes with 20 and in passing yards with 940. Almost every wide receiver got a piece of the pie with touchdown receptions where Dexter Manley led the pack with 3. On the defensive side it was all Defensive Back Jayson Serda who had an outstanding game with 10 solo tackles, 7 assisted and 2.5 sacks. Serda leads the league with 52 total tackles and an average of 13 tackles per game.
The Gladiators play their fifth game of the season on the road against the Amarillo Venom. The matchup takes place this Sunday April 2nd, 2017 with kick-off at 3:05 PM Mountain Time in Amarillo. Fans can watch the game online at DukeCityGladiators.com.
